University extension movement (engl., spr. juniwörrßĭtĭ ĕxtennsch'n muhw'mĕnt), Bewegung zur Ausbreitung der Universitätsbildung in weitern Volkskreisen, verbreitete sich von Cambridge (1873) aus über die meisten engl. Universitäten; ihr Organ ist das »University Extension Journal«. Der Unterricht umfaßt Vorträge, Besprechungen und schriftliche Arbeiten; auch Abschlußprüfungen und Preise sowie Sommerkurse mit praktischen Arbeiten sind vorgesehen. In Deutschland erstreben dasselbe die Volkshochschulkurse (s. Volkshochschulen).
